ITF Announces Registration Deadlines for Gov's Cup Lagos Tennis

Players willing to play in Futures 3 of the 15th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship have been told to register on or before 19 November, 2015.

The annual Governor’s Cup will hold from 5-19 December at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan. According to the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the deadline for the registration for the first leg (Futures 3) of the Governor’s Cup has been fixed for 14:00 GMTof Thursday, 19 November, while withdrawal deadline has also been fixed for 14:00 GMT of Tuesday, 24 November.

The qualifying matches of the first leg will hold between 5 and 6 December with the Main Draws holding from 7 - 12 December, while the Doubles events hold from 8-11 December.

For the second leg (Futures 4), the deadline for the registration, according to the ITF, has been fixed for 14:00 GMT of Thursday, 26 November, while withdrawal deadline is Tuesday, 1 December. The qualifying matches of the second leg will be played between 12 and 13 December, with the Main Draws scheduled from 14-19 December and the Doubles events holding in the same period.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Mrs Gloria Ekwempu - Chinuwuko said the enthusiasm shows by players across the world to come for the Governor's Cup is so high judging from the continuous enquiries being made by these players about how to get invitation letters for visas procurement from the Nigeria embassies around the world.

She said Monday that her office has been receiving calls even during the weekends from these players who want to be part of the show in Lagos this December.

"As at Sunday, many of the foreign players called to request for letters of invitation from the federation and I'm happy to say that we will have a full house this year despite the fact that the competition is coming a bit late, " she said.

She disclosed that the NTF is working with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) headed by Chief Pius Akinyelure and the Tournament Director, Prince Wale Oladunjoye to ensure that all logistics are put in place before the serves off day of the Governor's Cup.

"You know we're the intermediary between Lagos and the ITF, so we're working together with the LOC to make sure that Nigeria meets up with the requirements and standard of the ITF in the organization of a championship like this, " the scribe said.

According to the secretary, the Nigerian players would have the opportunity of the Dala Hard Court Championship which will hold in Kano from13-21 of November to prepare for the Governor’s Cup.

The Governor’s Cup is an ITF approved competition with a total prize money package of 80,000 dollars out of which the men get 30,000 dollars while the women winners in the two legs pocket 50,000 dollars.

The sponsorship of Governor's Cup is being facilitated over the years by FCMB and Etisalat Nigeria and others such as Deux Projects Ltd, Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, CCECC, Julius Berger Plc, Naston Ltd, LASACO Plc. and a host of other private individuals.

The support is also being received by the host state, Lagos State Government and in particular this year from Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who swiftly support to sustain the staging of the international tournament.
